Comment to Math Movie Network

I wrote the following comment on the Avery Bunch’s blog about decimal addition:

Thank you for sharing this great student project idea! I can see the students are leading the video creation and fully involved in the process. I can tell that they are producing high quality work because they know they are informing other students. This was a fun topic and a great way to demonstrate adding decimals! Please view my blog post reacting to the project: https://mshollander.school.blog/2019/06/06/student-blogging-project-math-movie-network/

  1. Hi Bethann,

I agree that it was really neat for them to post this project and the videos that they created. As a social studies teacher, I still like the idea of the “Math Movie Network.” I imagine that the fun idea could definitely get some students motivated. It sounds like there are a lot of things that you could do with this in the classroom. You could have students explain how to do a problem or explain how they came to an answer. Students definitely learn more when they have to explain something or teach someone else. Also, many students like to create videos, so this could end up being a fun and beneficial project. I can definitely think of ways to use this in my classroom. Many projects that we do in social studies could be turned into videos or developed to include a video component. As a cyber school teacher, I think I could still do something like this, but maybe only as one of a number of project choices.

  2. Hi Bethanne,
I really like this blogging idea. I can envision this blog becoming the study guide for end of year exams or lesson starter videos for the following year’s math classes! As teachers we have come to realize that you never really understand a concept until you have to teach it. Having the students create videos explaining how to solve the math problems will really help be beneficial to both the student creating the video and those watching it.
